University of ulster collaborative workshop

In February 2016 we received an invitation from Patricia Griffin, lecturer in the Belfast School of Art, University of Ulster, to facilitate a workshop for a group of students from various courses within the university. The focus of the project brief was The Art and Process of Storytelling and The Visual Narrative. In order to explore these key themes and ideas we decided to host a collaborative workshop, in which students worked collectively on group books to explore the various possibilities of narrative building and visual storytelling.

During the workshop the participants were introduced to image sequencing, editing and the craft of bookbinding. Working collaboratively in groups with a collective pool of images submitted by each student, each participant contributed their own particular working methods as part of the process of building relationships between images and building their books' narrative. The workshop culminated in the production of 10 unique handmade books.

The handmade books produced during the workshop are the product of practitioners from diverse backgrounds including fine art, illustration, photography, architecture, interactive design and textiles. They include Laura Cushnahan, PhD researcher, Faculty of Art Design and the Built Environment, Andrew Rankin, Belfast School of Art graduate and Belfast Exposed Futures photographer, and final year undergraduate students from Belfast School of Art: Stephanie Emphrey, and Mary Hamill, Photography; Laura Cochrane and Natalie Gilliland, Fashion and Textiles; Anne Rantakyla, and Kathryn Graham, Fine Art; and second year students Aimee Sands and Aine O’Hagan, Interactive Design.

This project was made possible through generous financial support from the Garfield Weston Trust, and the kind provision of space by Belfast Exposed Photography Gallery. The project culminated in an exhibition of the handmade books and two video pieces showing the workshop process and the final books. The exhibition took place from the 3rd to the 16th of May in The Glass Box, Belfast School of Art foyer, University of Ulster, York St, Belfast.
